Dear Friends:
Wishing you all Happy New Year and a Smooth Sailing through 2009!!
Approximately 250 people attended the first annual Red Kite Gala last month. The evening was co-hosted by Jana Katsuyama, reporter of KTVU Channel 2 News, and Scott Hildula, president of the Joanne Pang Foundation. The highlights of the evening were the Life Saver Award to Dr. Jordan Wilbur for his lifetime contribution in pediatric cancer treatment, and the presentation of an advocacy film titled “One Child, One Cord, and Two Lives,” which was co-illustrated by Kimberley Jones, Eric, Dr. Morton Cowan, and Brian Bender.
I was speechless and deeply touched by the warm support from everyone for this NCUBB project at the gala. Truly, the benefits of umbilical cord blood therapeutic treatment for leukemia and other cancers are indisputable. However, the need for a nonprofit and public umbilical cord blood bank in Northern California is long overdue. If it were God’s intention that Joanne be a messenger of this terrible disease, leukemia, she certainly had done her part.
We plan to consult with the key hospital officials in the next few months to see if we could first start this life-saving project in the first half of 2009 as a collection site-a logical step before a full-blown cord blood bank is put in place. The testing and the storage of each cord blood unit would be managed by other reputable cord blood banks. In light of the current economic doldrums, we believe that this intermediate step would permit us to quickly help expand the umbilical cord blood registries to be available worldwide to all patients in searching for a life-saving cord blood transplantation.
Finally, on behalf of all JPF board members, I would like to express our wholehearted appreciation to the honorary gala chairs, planning committee chairs, auction donors, and attendees for joining this “Journey of Hope” and providing unwavering support for the patients struggling with cancer, and their loving families.
Blessings,
Joe.

A Journey of Hope
RED KITE GALA HONORARY CHAIRS
The JPF is honored to announce the addition of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senator Dianne Feinstein to the list of the Red Kite Gala Honorary Chairs. The addition of these important members of the political community and strong support from the public as well as medical community further demonstrates the commitment to a public, non-profit umbilical cord blood bank in Northern California.
With the ethnic diversity found in the Bay Area, it is feasible that NCUBB (Northern California Umbilical Cord Blood Bank) could offer every eligible patient a chance at a life-saving transplant using the delivered placenta and umbilical cord. The advantages of using umbilical cord blood could be summarized as follows:
• A rich source of stem cells
• Less stringent matching criteria (For a bone marrow transplant, a minimum of 5/6 match is a must. For a cord blood transplant, a low 3/6 match would work)
• Less risk of graft vs. host disease (GVHD)
• Less risk of viral infections (baby stem cells are less infected with various viruses)
• Easily available within 72 hours (if the cord blood unit is already stored in the cord blood bank)
• Collected non-invasively
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The JPF is pleased to receive Red Kite Flyer level corporate sponsorship from Scott Hildula of the RedUmbrella Group and Gregory Porter of the Silverman, Krantz & Porter accountancy corporation. Scott Hildua and Gregory Porter are both members of the JPF board. Red Kite Flyer level – $2500+ sponsorship includes a table of 10, preferred seating, a full page ad in the event program and recognition on the Joanne Pang Foundation website.
In addition, the JPF is pleased to receive Partners level institutional support ($10K or higher) from Isabel Chiu of the En-Yong Foundation. Isabel Chiu is the founder of American Cancer Society-California Chinese Unit. Institutional donors will be proudly recognized in, but not limited to, a custom-designed plaque. The plaque will be displayed on the wall within the facilities of the NCUBB in perpetuity or as long as it is in operational.
If you wish to join the “journey of hope”, help us distribute the Red Kite brochures, and invite your friends and employers to support the NCUBB project, please feel free to contact Sally Brien Holper at sally@joannepang.org.
What Cancer cannot do-
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot suppress memories.
It cannot silence courage.
Blessings,
Joe Pang

Corporate Sponsorship Needed for the RedKite Gala
Dear Friends:
Wishing you a blissful summer!!
REDKITE GALA
The JPF is hosting the first annual Red Kite Gala fundraising dinner on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Irish Cultural Center in San Francisco. Proceeds will fund the Northern California Umbilical Cord Blood Bank. We have enlisted support from the following community and medical leaders.
Red Kite Gala Honorary Chairs:
Congressman Dan Lungren
Congresswoman Jackie Speier
Senator Leland Y. Yee, Ph.D.
Assemblywoman Fiona Ma
San Francisco Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier
San Francisco Supervisor Carmen Chu
San Francisco Supervisor Sean Elsbernd
Morton Cowan, M.D., UCSF, Children’s Hospital
Mitchell Katz, M.D., Director, San Francisco Public Health Department
Michael Amylon, M.D., Stanford University
Joanne Kurtzberg, M.D., Duke Medical Center
Jordan Wilbur, M.D., Cancer Hope
Rev. Msgr. Michael Harriman, Pastor, St. Cecilia Parish
We are asking for support from corporations, foundations and organizations to help raise $2.5 M for this NCUBB project. Please help us by asking your employers for sponsorship or matching grants for this event. Please help us turn the biological medical waste-placenta and umbilical cord in the San Francisco Bay Area into a miracle of life-saving therapeutic treatment for many patients with serious diseases in Northern California and worldwide. Umbilical cord blood stem cell transplants have been increasingly recognized as an effective treatment option for cancer, immune deficiencies and genetic disorders, etc, in the 21st century.
HADLEY HOPE FUND NEEDED TO SAVE PEYTON AND KAYLA
The Hadley family drove down from the state of Oregon and met with me in San Francisco on Saturday, August 9. Two of their three children are affected with Niemann-Pick Type C disease, a neurodegenerative illness in nature. It is similar to Alzheimer's disease in children. For additional information, please visit their website at www.hadleyhope.com.
The symptoms for Peyton, their eldest child at the age of 11, began two and a half years ago, and it took almost two years to receive a diagnosis. Peyton, once an early reader and talker, began cognitive decline, weight loss, and now speaks very slowly. Kayla, a lovely girl, is also sadly diagnosed with this disease. I could sympathize with their parents, Bryan and Laura, as it is agonizing and devastating to watch the children degenerating slowly to their end-point. According to recent research, they have found that umbilical cord blood stem cell transplantation may possibly be one therapy toward a cure. A cord blood experiment will be conducted in NP-C mice in the United States in the next couple of months that will test the viability of treatment. They plan to provide $100,000 to fund research and trials in the States.
Hopefully, once the NCUBB project is up and running, JPF will be able to focus on funding research and sponsoring clinical trials related to the use of the umbilical cord blood stem cells.
Blessings,
Joseph Pang

Donor Appreciation Plaque
Dear Friends:
DONOR APPRECIATION PLAQUE
The concept of “Donor Appreciation Plaque” and the abbreviated version of the “NCUBB business plan” are attached for your review.
For institutional donors, the JPF and the UCSF Children’s Hospital will proudly recognize your names but not limited to a custom-designed plaque based on the following categories. The plaque will be displayed on the wall within the facilities of the cord blood bank in perpetuity or as long as it is in operational at the UCSF Children’s Hospital.
Visionaries: $500K or higher
Founders: $250K or higher
Champions: $100K or higher
Benefactors: $50K or higher
Partners: $10K or higher
Individual contribution at the $50, $100, $200 or $500 or higher level will still play a key role in helping achieve this goal and will be recognized too. From my past experiences, it would be more difficult to solicit institutional supports. However, if many individuals could demonstrate their enthusiasm and love for this project, I believe the institutional donors would be moved and will follow suit in backing up this project.
We would need your help to distribute these attached files and communicate this NCUBB project to your friends and employers. Increasingly, the cord blood transplant has been playing a key role with its easier matching criteria and reduced graft-versus-host diseases (GVHD) effect in curing more than 70 blood/bone related diseases and genetic disorders.
We would like to thank wholeheartedly the recent contribution from the Blue Shield of California. We would like to acknowledge Supervisor Sean Elsbernd of San Francisco for facilitating this donation.
NEW JPF AND NCUBB WEBSITES
We hope you would appreciate the new looks with the cheering pictures of the angelic Joanne. In many ways, Joanne will always be remembered as a Leukemia Kid and she will constantly remind us the struggle of many patients, especially those heroic little children, battling deadly and terminal diseases for a chance at life. Her book “See Daddy! That’s the New Kite” in both English and Chinese will be available for patients who are currently fighting to overcome the adversaries.
UPCOMING EVENT
Annual Public Joanne Pang Foundation Meeting scheduled for Saturday, November 15, 2008, 2:00-4:00pm; Meeting open to the public to scrutinize our accounting procedures and our accomplishments for the year.
Year-end fund-raising dinner scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2008; more than 35 people had attended the volunteer night on June 12 at Leanna’s home in preparation of this event. We would still need additional help in publicity, event underwriting, reservations/table sales, and raffle, etc. Please contact Lisa Napoli of the JPF Community Relations at Lisa@joannepang.org if you could help out.
Flyers with more details will be distributed later.
Wishing you all a Happy July 4th weekend!!
Joe.

JPF Event “Celebrating Joanne” on April 19, Saturday
Dear Friends:
The flyer for “Celebrating Joanne” is attached. I also enclose a flyer which we had used in communicating the NCUBB project. Please help circulate these flyers to your friends if feasible. We are inviting the friends of the JPF to celebrate Joanne’s birthday and become active members to help communicate this life-saving project to various Bay Area communities. All ages are welcome.
When the board proposed to kick off this year’s activities with the celebration of Joanne’s birthday, many thoughts had crossed my mind: “What an unthinkable journey with Joanne!! What a transformation of my life after her passing.” Fr. Vito Perrone noted in the foreword of her story in 2005: “…Dear Joanne, as I read through your father’s book for my final time, I was crying and shaking, so deeply was I moved by who you are. They were not so much tears of sorrow over your terrible suffering or your death, but tears of victory – of joy – for Joanne, you won! Joanne, your life has been victorious. Your heroic virtue in this life has been rewarded with eternal life, and the Light of Christ, which shone through you, has helped light that same Light within us...”
“…If it were God’s intention that you be the messenger of this terrible disease, leukemia, you did your part. You made a lot of people aware of it. Some prominent people heard it, too. Mayor Brown and supervisor Tony Hall will honor you in their meetings…” said Anne Lee, Joanne’s Mom, in her email to the caring friends in memory of Joanne on January 20, 2003 shortly after her passing into eternity on January 13 that year.
Please join us in honor of Joanne and all the loved ones heroically battling various deadly and terminal diseases. I also believe that the heaven is having a big smile on our little project of LOVE to challenge the leukemia and all other cancers in the 21st century. Thanks.
Blessings,
Joe.

A Documentary on Joanne
Dear Friends:
With my wholehearted thanks to the production crew, friends, and supporters of the JPF, I am proudly presenting to you a documentary on Joanne. It is now available to view on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/joannepangfoundation.
I hope you would be thrilled as I have been to hear this voice message “See Daddy! That’s the New Kite,” resembling Joanne’s nine months after her passing. Was it a wakeup call to me? Certainly, yes. It has helped not only relieve all the quilt that I had felt for failing to keep her with us but also reveal that Joanne has a new form of life and is free from suffering like a kite flying happily in the sky as said in the Bible.
“Joanne symbolized LOVE,” Msgr. Harriman of Saint Cecilia Church said at Joanne’s funeral service on January 16, 2003. I hope Joanne’s journey of Faith, Love, and Hope would remind us the sufferings of many patients like her in need of a life-saving transplant and encourage us to support the NCUBB project at the UCSF children’s hospital. Thanks.
Blessings,
Joseph Pang.

A Challenging Project in a Difficult Time
Dear Friends:
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year!!
Please accept my apology for not sending out the greetings sooner. We were simply busy preaching the NCUBB project and laying the ground work for the awareness campaign events this year.
In addition to many press coverage on the launch, we were also on the air waves as follows
KOIT Radio interview "Today's World with Sherry Brown" with Sherry Brown, Dr. Morton Cowan of UCSF, and Scott Hildula on December 12, 2007
http://koit.radiotown.com/todaysworld/12142007.mp3
Channel 8 KTSF26 Talk Tonight with Orlando Shih and Joseph Pang on January 9. Interview is available once permitted by KTSF26 for release.
Additional interview with Liz Saint John and Scott Hildula was aired this weekend on the following radio stations:Alice @ 97.3 fm – Sunday between 7-8 a.m.Between 6-7 a.m. On KFRC, KMBC (99.7) and KITS (Live 105 FM) and KYOU on 1550 AM
We are also in the production of making a 5 to 10 minutes documentary film on the story of Joanne and the mission of the foundation which will be available in late February.
We will be presenting the NCUBB project at various meetings, such as Lions Club, Kiwanis, and Evangelization Concert... in the coming months. Key awareness campaign events, such as Golf, Dinner/Annual Reconciliation, etc., are currently being planned.
If you could contribute your time and assist us in these events, please let us know. We will be happy to fan out to present the project if you could help us arrange one. We hope, through many of these functions, we could solicit needed supports for this NCUBB project from various Bay Area communities.
Finally, on behalf of the JPF board, I would like to thank many of you for the precious times and generous donations in support of this project. We are really undertaking a challenging project in a difficult time (Economic uncertainties) and we need lots of your prayers.
I would like to conclude this update with a memorable note “God hears even the smallest voice” from Sr. Margaret, Joanne’s 2nd grader teacher during her illness. Together with your help, we would let our little voice be heard and make the dream of the NCUBB a reality.
For additional information, please contact Lisa Napoli, our latest addition to the board, of Community Relations at lisanapoli@sbcglobal.net.

Blessings,
Joe.
